Guitar phenom and songwriter, Marcus King, was born in South Carolina 25 years ago. He began learning guitar at age of 4, and has played professionally since he was 11. As a musician, Marcus follows his family’s footsteps- his grandfather was a country guitarist, and his father, Marvin King, is a well-known blues guitarist.
The Marcus King Band (King on guitar and lead vocals) was founded in 2013, mixing southern soul, classic rock and blues. Their debut album (released in 2015), “Soul Insight”, was noticed by the legendary Warren Haynes, one the finest guitar players in the world. Haynes liked what he heard and decided to let Marcus King Band open shows for his Gov’t Mule. By taking the group under his wings Haynes’ helped spread the news about King’s music among new fans and music influencers. In 2018 the band released its 3rd album, “Carolina Confessions”, including the ballad “Goodbye Carolina”.
The song delivers that powerful blend of rock and soul, that has made King a rising singer-songwriter star. Its lyrics describes his pain after leaving his hometown to peruse a music career, using the state as a personification of bad memories he was trying to leave behind, such as the loss of a good friend. The guitar wizard combines a moving singing with a horn section and a Paul Weller keyboard kind of style which creates a deep and rich sound. King Often mentions The Allman Brothers as a meaningful influencers on his music. This tune would have definitely made them proud.
This is a classic, absolutely incredible.
