Dire Straits’ “Live At The BBC” was recorded on 22 July 1978 at BBC Studios. The album (released only in 1995!) consists the smashing hit song, written just a year earlier, launching the band into becoming a global rock phenomenon.
Mark Knofler was inspired to write it after watching a little Dixieland jazz band called the Sultans of Swing that played in a half-empty London pub. He was amused by their grandiose name that was in contrast to the reality of that night performance. There’s an exciting fresh feeling listening to one of the first live versions of Sultans of Swing.
Pick Withers, the band original member gives a high adrenaline performance on drums, as Mark Knofler revealed to the world his virtuoso fingerpicking technique, in a mesmerizing guitar riff.
